Adding Weights To Squid Jigs

With squid fishing in the UK becoming more & more popular, here is a technique on how some of us have been rigging them here in Jersey for a few years now.

Sometimes you just need that bit extra weight to get your squid jigs hard on the bottom, so these handy slide-on weights allow you to rig your jigs in a manner of ways.

In a range from 10g to 40g they can be used on both floating and sinking jigs, and even on a "drop-shot" style rig to keep your lure in one spot. Even turning the age-old classic jig in to a great high-glowing jig to run along the bottom. years ago we would just add a ball weight on the line in front, but this can cause the jig to snag easily.

Putting them on a standard jig likem the picture below is deadly when on clean ground and even more so when cuttlefish are around too.

Some jigs come with holes in the jigs weight, the add-on weight can simply be added through these holes, or like this picture below you can add to the protection bar, which also allows the weight to slide to the back and keep the jig straighter.

And then of course there is the classic "floating" type jig, these are normally used on paternoster style rigs where up to three jigs can be fished. But if you simply use a weight on the nose you have then created a floating jig that is hard on the sea bed. Being floating it keeps the rear of the jig up higher and hopefully away from snags.

Being very luminous it also adds to the attraction of the lure. You can find all our squid jigs and these weights in our squid jig section on our site here
